Designed and created in collaboration with Racing Surfaces Testing Laboratory (RSTL) and Alexanders Mechanical Solutions. This device is used to measure the total surface penetration depth, moisture content, and GPS coordinates for each measurement taken on dirt, synthetic, and or turf horse racing surfaces.
Based on the Longchamp Penetrometer design, this device features a 1 kg mass falling from 1 meter and striking a 1 sq cm rod into the surface. The total displacement (penetration depth), volumetric moisture content, GPS coordinates, surface salinity, surface temperature, and dielectric constant are then measured simultaneously. This device is capable of uploading measurements wirelessly with cloud processing to identify where each surface measurement came from (track and pole location) and then send detailed report summaries of the data collected at any given time. Example reports are shown below!
These measurements are considered to be critical as the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) moves forward with their required surface documentation which includes daily surface monitoring and measurements. The Longchamp Penetrometer's penetration depth has also been linked to racing times and horse injuries on the turf, making the Integrated Racetrack Surface Tester become a promising daily monitoring tool.
